When the seasons change, it’s not just the weather that shifts — your wardrobe does too. Heavy coats and sweaters make way for sundresses and shorts, and before long, it’s time to swap them back again. But how do you make sure your clothes stay fresh, clean, and ready to wear when you pull them out next year? Here’s a practical guide to storing your seasonal clothes the right way.

Start by Sorting and Assessing

Before you start packing, take everything out and go through your wardrobe piece by piece:

  • Is it still in good condition? Donate or recycle anything that’s worn out, stained, or doesn’t fit anymore.
  • Do you actually wear it? If you haven’t reached for it in a couple of years, it might be time to let it go.
  • Does it need repair? Sew on missing buttons, fix small tears, and take anything delicate to the dry cleaner if needed.

By keeping only what you truly love and use, you’ll make storage easier and your next seasonal switch much smoother.

Wash or Dry Clean Before Storing

Even clothes that look clean can hold traces of sweat, perfume, or body oils that attract moths or cause odors over time. Wash everything according to the care label, and have delicate fabrics like wool, silk, or coats professionally cleaned.

Make sure every item is completely dry before storing — even a little moisture can lead to mildew or musty smells. Air-dry garments on a rack or clothesline to ensure they’re fully dry.

Choose the Right Storage Containers

The way you store your clothes makes a big difference in how well they hold up. Here are some good options:

  • Plastic bins with tight lids protect against dust and moisture. Line them with acid-free tissue paper to prevent creases.
  • Fabric or vacuum-sealed bags are great for bulky items like puffer jackets or sweaters. Avoid vacuum-sealing delicate fabrics that need to breathe.
  • Cotton garment bags are ideal for hanging coats, dresses, and suits. They keep dust out while allowing airflow.

Skip the dry-cleaner plastic bags — they trap moisture and can cause yellowing over time.

Protect Against Moths and Moisture

Moths love natural fibers like wool and cashmere, but you can easily keep them away. Add small sachets of lavender, cedar, or cloves to your storage bins — they smell great and deter insects naturally. Cedar blocks or balls can also be refreshed with a few drops of cedar oil when their scent fades.

To prevent dampness, place silica gel packets or moisture absorbers in your containers, especially if you’re storing clothes in a basement or attic.

Pick the Right Storage Spot

Temperature and humidity matter. The best place to store clothes is cool, dry, and dark — think under the bed, in a closet, or in a climate-controlled storage area. Avoid spots with big temperature swings, like garages or attics, which can cause fabrics to deteriorate.

If you have the space, consider dedicating a closet to off-season clothes. It makes swapping wardrobes faster and keeps everything organized.

Make It Easy to Find Later

When packing, think ahead to next season. Label each bin clearly — for example, “Winter Sweaters,” “Coats,” or “Summer Dresses.” You can even list the contents on the label or take a quick photo of what’s inside and save it on your phone. That way, you’ll know exactly where everything is without opening every box.

A Little Effort That Pays Off

Storing your seasonal clothes properly takes a bit of time, but it’s worth it. You’ll extend the life of your wardrobe, reduce clutter, and enjoy the satisfaction of pulling out fresh, ready-to-wear pieces when the weather changes again.

With a little care and the right storage methods, you’ll open those bins next season to find your clothes looking just as good as when you packed them away.
